The Octotel Youth Accelerator 2023: Inspiring and empowering the next generation of innovators
In the spirit of continuous support for the education of the South African youth and empowering community development, RSAWEB proudly supported the Youth Accelerator Day in conjunction with Octotel. This event, held at the Love Life Youth Centre in Langa on 21 July, brought together matric students from Khulani and Isilimela Secondary Schools for an inspiring day filled with access to organisations and speakers that would help shape the next steps of their lives.
In today’s digital world, access to affordable connectivity becomes a necessity. It creates learning, working, and entrepreneurial opportunities through access to resources, people, and information. Through this initiative, we aimed to create a lasting community impact, inspire and motivate the youth, and provide career guidance in the fast-evolving tech and corporate landscape.

The venue: Love Life Youth Centre
The Love Life Youth Centre in Langa provided the perfect setting for the event. The centre has been a crucial part of the Langa community for many years, offering various facilities such as sports areas, a fitness centre, and a computer lab.
The schools: Khulani and Isilimela Secondary School
Khulani Secondary School, with 104 matriculants and Isilimela Secondary School, with 373 matriculants attended the event and had an absolute blast. The students were exposed to the latest tricks and trends of the technology industry and addressed by key speakers who grew up in the Langa community and succeeded in their business ventures. They even had the opportunity to partake in an exuberant TikTok dance competition.
The exhibitors: Creating opportunities beyond connectivity
Leading South African organisations exhibited at this event, offering students access to possible further education through bursaries, as well as potential job opportunities.
The exhibitors included Media24, UNISA (University of South Africa), Western Cape Education Department (WCED), African Bank, Bridges for Music, NSFAS, Nyda (National Youth Development Agency), AfrikaTikkum, AK Fitness, Ikamva Youth, and CETA (Construction Education and Training Authority).
The speakers: Leading by example
The event featured inspiring speakers from all walks of life who shared their stories and experiences with the students. These moments stood out:
“If you don’t know your purpose in life, try to follow your passion because it will lead you to your purpose,” ─ Ayanda Kahla, founder of AK Fitness and a fitness trainer at SAPS.
“We often look so far for ideas when they are right in our environment. We are born to create solutions for our people and community,” ─ Vincent Manzini, co-founder of Black Kanvas and Ikapa Live and a renowned house DJ.
“It is vital to follow your dreams despite your background and circumstances,” ─ Katlego Maboe, a TV personality, voice-over artist, and philanthropist.
“No matter what you choose in life, you must never forget where you came from as that will always give you a foundation to build upon and guide you in the future,” ─ Siya Beyile, founder of The Threaded Man.
“As a nation, we owe it to the youth to empower them, and we should pay it forward, ensuring the country’s sustainable future. While there is no recipe for success, investing in our children could go a long way toward the betterment of the country,” ─ Thulani Magazi: Editor of People’s Post and City Vision.
The benefits: A world of possibilities
Exposure to technology
The students were introduced to the latest advancements in fibre technology, expanding their knowledge of its applications.
Career inspiration and guidance
By showcasing diverse career opportunities, the event encouraged students to explore their interests and consider potential career paths.
Access to industry professionals
The interaction with industry professionals provided networking, mentorship, and future collaboration opportunities for the students.
Community engagement
The event fostered a sense of community, encouraging collaboration and support for the schools and their students.
