Honouring the Past, Empowering the Future: RSAWEB Celebrates Youth Month

Every June, South Africa commemorates Youth Month in recognition of the young people involved in the 1976 Soweto Uprising, whose courageous actions contributed to the country’s journey toward greater equality and freedom.

At RSAWEB, we believe that honouring this legacy goes beyond reflection; it requires action. That’s why, this year, we’ve proudly partnered with Octotel and Heart FM to support the 16 Days-for-Youth campaign — a powerful initiative that uplifts youth-focused projects across the Western Cape. Through this partnership, RSAWEB is actively investing in the next generation by getting involved in meaningful, hands-on projects that make a real difference in the communities we serve.

Butterfly House – A Heartfelt Beginning

Our journey began on Monday, 2 June at Butterfly House in Paarl East, a community centre that supports vulnerable children and youth affected by life-threatening or life-limiting conditions. This remarkable NGO provides holistic care through educational, nutritional, and cultural programmes that address deep-rooted challenges such as poverty, abuse, and lack of access to basic resources.

Together with the Octotel CSR team, RSAWEB staff rolled up their sleeves to make an impact. We donated toiletries, towels, and blankets for the centre’s rewards shop, painted the jungle gym to brighten the play area, and braaied boerewors rolls for their two daily feeding sessions, reaching over 200 children in one day. It was a celebration of care, community, and deep compassion.

From Hope to Action: Stepping Stones Children’s Centre

On Friday, 6 June, we visited Stepping Stones Children’s Centre, an early childhood development hub with a rich legacy dating back to 1976. Established in response to the forced removals in District Six, Stepping Stones has consistently championed inclusive, holistic child development.

RSAWEB staff joined forces with Octotel to bring new life to their outdoor space by repainting the jungle gym and repairing the centre’s entrance gate. We also built and donated a vegetable garden, planting seeds that will not only feed the children but also serve as a living classroom to teach them about the life cycle of food. We also provided child-friendly gardening tools to encourage hands-on involvement in the garden.

To support the centre’s operations, we also donated a printer and a portable speaker. These are small contributions that we hope will make a big difference to the staff and the children.

Uplifting Spirits at Bright Stars Safe House

Our next stop was Bright Stars Safe House in Kraaifontein on Thursday and Friday, 12–13 June, a home that has provided love, safety, and stability to children since 2011. At Bright Stars, young people are given more than just shelter; they’re empowered with the tools to dream, grow, and thrive.

RSAWEB, together with Octotel, spent two inspiring days at the safe house painting a colourful mural that quickly became a highlight of the visit. The artwork drew so much attention that members of the community, especially the young residents of Bright Stars, were eager to get involved and add their creative touches, turning the mural into a true community project

In addition to the mural, we assisted with the feeding scheme and donated essential items including food and toiletries to help meet immediate needs. In the future, we will also be assisting with connectivity to support their digital access.

At RSAWEB, we understand that youth are the future and that the future is built through consistent, meaningful investment in their well-being. We’re proud to be part of the 16 Days for Youth initiative, and even more proud to stand alongside the communities, organisations, and individuals who make lasting impact possible.

Stay tuned with updates shared across our social media platforms as we continue this journey and celebrate Youth Month, not just in words, but through action.
