RSAWEB enriches lives by sponsoring connectivity at RA Engar ICT Academy

A community-driven educational project close to our hearts

One of the biggest driving forces behind RSAWEB has always been our passion for supporting education and skills development in South Africa. Over the years, we’ve been providing free connectivity to schools and community development organisations, helping students gain access to online learning resources. Recently, we’ve taken hands with the RA Engar ICT Academy to provide Fibre Internet connectivity to their lab, enabling them to help anyone learn and succeed online.

“We believe that too many people consider South Africa as a second-class citizen when it comes to the Digital Age. We want to change this. We’re passionate about technology and how it enables lives and empowers businesses to succeed online and beyond. This starts with the generation of tomorrow. It starts at home and in the schools. We want all pupils at all schools to have access to connectivity. This will pave the way for future developers, engineers, and tech enthusiasts!” says Wendy-Anne Bailey, Home Consumer Business Unit Head at RSAWEB.

Connection ─ RSAWEB sponsors connectivity at RA Engar ICT Academy

In today’s fast-paced world, technology plays a crucial part in education. By providing free connectivity, we’re giving students the tools to grow and succeed online and beyond, enabling the next generation of leaders and innovators to step forward.

Innovation ─ introducing the RA Engar ICT Academy

The RA Engar ICT Academy was established in 2023 in Port Shepstone, KwaZulu Natal, and forms part of Digital Skills Africa ─ a non-profit organisation. This lab is free for use by anyone, although the focus is on educating the unemployed youth.

The lab offers classes to develop students’ digital skills, enabling them to utilise technology in their future careers. Each class can cater for up to twenty students and the course material is provided by the Cisco Networking Academy and aligned to industry certifications. Upon completion of a certification, the lab also assists students with their LinkedIn profiles, CV revamps, and job searches.

“Digital Skills Africa is a non-profit company established to reignite hope and address socio-economic transformation through digital empowerment. Our key mandate is to empower all disadvantaged people with career possibilities through digital skills aligned to digital transformation. With RSAWEB’s contribution through free connectivity, we can ensure that marginalised communities have access to infrastructure, more especially, the internet at no cost. By giving access to the internet, we know that the opportunities are endless"

Education ─ learn more skills at the RA Engar ICT Academy

The lab consists of three main stations where students can sharpen their skill sets:

  • Problem-solving and creative-thinking station – this is the first station comprising cognitive stimulating activities, such as puzzles, problem-solving games and math sets, aimed at encouraging creative thinking and ideation in the technology space.
  • Main content station – here students have access to ten laptops with Fibre Internet. The lab specifically chose laptops so that students can continue to learn during loadshedding with a UPS (uninterrupted power supply) keeping the internet connected.
  • Hardware demo station – this station showcases the different components of a computer, such as a CPU and Motherboard, and how it’s assembled to form a desktop.

The lab has a smart TV and Cisco video conferencing units and mentorship from industry leaders can also be arranged.
